Sufis: Islam’s Wanderers and Poets
Since the time of Muhammad in the 7th century, Sufis have wandered the known world, singing and dancing Islam’s message of brotherhood, weeping and laughing out their love of God in poetry that sounds utterly contemporary to our ears. From Spain to Indonesia, Sufis established mosques, schools, and fostered a love for poetry. Explore their history; meet the great 8th century woman poet Rabiah and the better-known men of the 12th and 13th centuries (Rumi, Hafiz). This rich tradition continues to inspire; Rumi remains the bestselling poet in America.
